They're largely interchangeable terms for the same equipment category. "Man lift" is the older, more colloquial term; "aerial work platform (AWP)" and "mobile elevating work platform (MEWP)" are the terms now standard in industry regulations and training. Scissor lifts, order pickers, and boom lifts all fall under this umbrella.
No. A scissor lift only moves vertically using a crisscross support mechanism, best suited to flat, open surfaces. A boom lift extends both vertically and horizontally via an articulating or telescopic arm, allowing it to reach over obstacles — a fundamentally different lifting mechanism, not just a size difference.
No. A forklift moves and lifts palletized loads at ground level; an order picker elevates the operator directly to shelving for individual item retrieval. They're both warehouse equipment but solve different tasks.
It depends on the task, not just the height. Order pickers suit fast, repetitive single-item retrieval; scissor lifts suit jobs needing a wider platform for tools, materials, or two-person work. Also factor in aisle width, floor conditions, and how often the equipment will be repositioned during a shift.
Electric models are quieter and emission-free, suited to indoor use; hydraulic models generally offer higher capacity and are better suited to heavier-duty outdoor or construction applications. Some hybrid configurations (hydraulic drive, electric power source) combine elements of both.
This varies significantly by model — always check the rated safe working load against your actual task weight, including tools and materials carried up, not just operator body weight.
In most regions, yes — operator training and certification requirements apply regardless of brand, and vary by country. Factor training time into your equipment rollout schedule.
CE, ISO 9001, and — depending on your target market — ANSI/SAIA A92 are commonly requested certifications. Legitimate manufacturers should be able to provide documentation on request; treat reluctance to share certification as a red flag rather than an oversight.
Emergency lowering, guardrails, interlock protection, and emergency stop switches are baseline expectations — not premium add-ons. If a quoted unit lacks these, that's worth questioning before ordering.
Request certification documentation (CE, ISO, etc.), ask for factory audit or video verification of facility size and staff count, and request product samples before committing to bulk orders. Slow responses or unwillingness to answer technical questions are common warning signs.
Prices significantly below market average, no certification documentation available, poor or evasive communication, and no clear after-sales support or spare parts policy. A new supplier with no transaction history isn't automatically disqualifying, but it does warrant more due diligence.
Delayed shipments, inconsistent hydraulic system quality, welding defects, and missing spare parts are frequently cited issues — most of which trace back to inconsistent manufacturing quality control rather than one-off shipping problems. This is why verifying in-house production (vs. resold/outsourced units) matters during supplier evaluation.
Not without checking what's included — shipping terms, certification, and warranty coverage often aren't reflected in a bare unit price. A lower quote with unclear terms frequently costs more once hidden costs or quality issues surface.

A lifting platform elevates workers, tools, and materials to complete tasks at height — stocking, maintenance, installation, and inspection — providing a stable, level surface instead of relying on ladders or scaffolding.
A battery powers a lift motor connected to a hydraulic pump, which raises and lowers the platform. Drive and steering (on self-propelled models) are also electrically powered, controlled through a handlebar or joystick.
It depends heavily on the model — compact units may reach 5–6m, while larger scissor lift platforms can reach 10m or more. Always check the specific working height rating, not just platform height, since the two figures differ.
